"Rev" Ken Cooley of Masala
on lead vocals and guitar
*
Greg Garcia of The Kelvins
on lead and rhythm guitars
* Angela Grano of Jamie Strange
and various other guises on vocals
* Travis LaMothe of That 70's band,
Angry Beautiful & formerly

* John Philbin of The Jimmy Hats
on bass
12.30.04
- Jet Black Jane has a singer. The band will begin rehearsals
in earnest this weekend and should be out in the clubs by mid-February.
This is going to be a fucking good time.
Happy
New Year! Greg Garcia
12.20.04
- Happy Holidays everyone! Auditions for the new band are now
wrapping up, and a final decision will be rendered by the end of
the year. Thanks to all of the talented singers who have auditioned
and waited patiently for the outcome - I promise you'll be appraised
of the outcome before January first.
Watch for the new look of this site, as it'll be transformed into
the new band's site in January.
11.15.04
- The auditions will be closed as of 11/21/04. We've
auditioned a number of excellent singers, and will be hearing three
more before we narrow this down and make our final decision. Thanks
everyone who has tried out! As of right now, everyone we've
heard is still in the running, but within a week, we'll be deciding,
emailing the finalists for call-backs and letting the rest know
that they've been eliminated.
Our first gig [aside from some warm-ups at electric open mics] should
take place in early January. Our band name? Well, we're still wrangling
with that, but we should have a decision within the next week. Expect
to hear a whole bunch of Kelvins songs, a lot of new songs, and
a few really fucking cool covers...
If you've got any imput on what Kelvins songs you want to hear in
the future, or just want to voice some opinion about what's going
on here, go to the MESSAGEBOARD
and drop us a line.
11.01.04
- We're still looking for a male OR female lead singer
for our new project. CLICK HERE for
details. A new band is coming together that will undoubtedly
feature some Kelvins music. Hell, why not - I wrote it, I can perform
it! This new [as yet unnamed] band will feature Travis LaMothe
[of That 70's Band and formerly the founding drummer of rane]
on drums and one John Philbin [of The Jimmy Hats]
on bass. We're currently in rehearsals and auditioning singers [I've
decided not to sing lead vocals in this incarnation], with several
promising voices so far. Another departure from the original Kelvins
format will be the addition of a Hammond/Rhodes organ player. I've
always loved the sound of those old school organs in Zeppelin and
Crowes songs, and have 2 fine players looking at taking the slot.
We've already written several songs, and have been rehearsing several
Kelvins songs and covers [a few will be a part of our repertoire,
but this will be an original band] for our set. We should be gigging
by December [pending the decision on a singer] and will keep you
all posted right here on the Kelvins site.
08.23.04
- Our exile from gigs will continue, it seems. Really, we're just
unable to coordinate rehearsal/writing sessions right now, so we're
staying on our hiatus until such time as we get it together. The
Kelvins remain, and will be back in action in the future, but we're
not planning anything beyond finishing the long overdue album and
throwing a release party. Yep, it sucks. Fuck it, though, we're
all still looking forward to making more Kelvins music in the future.
and gigging before the year is out.
Meanwhile, I'm currently scouting for members for a side project
that'll be original rock of a slightly different flavor [the songs
mentioned in the previous post will be relegated to the new band].
So far, I've got Mr. Jay Wood on-board [who else on drums?
shit man, he's the only choice. and am scouting for other musicians to get it
on. That's news for now... Cheers, Greg
07.13.04
- It seems as though everyone I run into these days thinks that
The Kelvins are broken up. I'm not at all surprised about this,
as we've not played a gig in over 6 months, but rumors of our demise
are false. We're currently rehearsing new material that will debut
soon. At present, 2 new songs are being polished up, and we hope
to have 2 or 3 more ready for our next gig. Honestly, we were kind
of sick of playing our older material, and really needed a break
from it [and the whole thing] to re-charge our collective batteries.
Mission accomplished. In the meantime, I'm planning a side project
that I'll write more about in the near future.
That's all for now... Cheers,
Greg
06.24.04
- Oh, that naughty Thomas Pizzola. The Hartford Advocate 'Local
Motion' columnist had a bit O' fun with the Kelvins image while
writing a review for our new pals The
Reign. Here's the quote:
"On Saturday I went to the Zen Bar and caught Hartford's
the Reign , who played a decent set of straight-ahead, riff-oriented
rock, that only started to grate when the band wandered a little
too close to Staind territory for their, and the audience's, own
good. In a way the band is very similar to another local act --
the Kelvins -- except without the snazzy wardrobes. Well,
that and the Kelvins have never attempted to play nu-metal, but
wouldn't it be funny to see Greg Garcia in a backwards-turned baseball
cap going all Fred Durst on your ass? Well, maybe not. But still,
Reign front man Scott Sebastian has an expressive voice and when
the band kept it simple and rocking, they played good, no-frills
bar rock. That's not a slam.".
Well, Thomas, to you I say THANKS for the ink! We're honored to
be of the iconic status that merits comparison. Today, Reign frontman
Scott Sebastian sent me an email joking about borrowing a
shirt, so at least he's taking it in the spirit of good sportsmanship.
Personally [and speaking largely from the ego...], I can't wait
to check this band out! Look for double bills sometime in the near
future. Perhaps we'll play some "Nookie".
That's
it for today, Greg
06.09.04
- Yep, it's that time again... The Hartford Advocate Grand Band
Slam is on, and once again your Kelvins are nominated. This
time, we're up for the odd choice of "Best Pop Rock",
but whatevah, we'll take it! If you like us, please go and vote
for us by clicking [VOTING NOW CLOSED - Thanks!]. Thanks!
04.30.04
- Our messageboard has moved. CLICK
HERE to go there and update your bookmark. We Kelvins are now
officially OFF of our self-imposed hiatus, and are writing new songs
[2 are almost done as I write this]. We'll be debuting the new material
at Sully's in June - official gig announcement in a week or so.
Happy daze.
04.15.04
- Here's the album, but not in it's final order... [CLICK]
02.10.04
- I've been a plain old slacker in updating this page, and should
be punished accordingly. Here's a quick update:
1)
We still exist!
2)
The next studio session will take place on February 19th, and will
be the next to last before mastering commences. This is great,
because it means this fucking album is almost done!
3) We'll be back out in the clubs in late winter/early spring. We're
not gigging now [despite offers and available gigs] because we want
to wait until the album is ready and give you some juicy
new songs.
4) work on our next album [I know, that sounds really funny...]
will begin this summer.
In
the meantime, Happy New Year, Happy Presidents Day, Happy Groundhog
Day and Happy Valentines Day. In other news, Justin Timberlake is
a wus for apologizing [what, 3 times?!?], CBS needs an enema, Janet
Jackson needs a boob lift, Bush needs to GO, Mark needs a new job
[one that doesn't take him to California for 1/2 of every month
and kill our rehearsal schedule], Winter needs to end, I need a
drink and you probably do too.
Cheers,
Greg
11.17.03
- A good friend of mine and a good friend of many - India Blue -
has passed away. India was [as many reading this know] a staff photographer
for The Hartford Advocate, and also the former writer of the 'Local
Motion' music column there. As such, she reviewed your Kelvins several
times, and always had something positive to say. She also took many
fotos of us, most of which are posted on this site. India was a
lot more than just that, though. Over the last several years, India
and I became friends, and I'll always value that friendship. She
was a practitioner of Wicca, and introduced me to it's philosophies.
While I chose not to follow that particular path, I learned more
about myself and my world from her teaching. India was also a person
full of life and had a timeless youthfullness to her that belied
age. She refused to comply with the status quoe, and always amazed
me with her energy. I'm sure she lived a full life, but I also think
she had more to offer this world. I'll miss her, and a great many
others will too. My condolences, and those of The Kelvins, go out
to her sons, family and friends.
11.08.03
- One month later and the album edges closer to completion. Mark's
backing vocal tracks are done, and we're beginning the final mix/post-production.
To celebrate, we've posted a couple of recordings on the site: 'The
Real You' and 'The Well'. Go to the HEAR
US page to download them!
10.15.03
- Wow, I hadn't realised how long it's been since I posted any news.
Since August, we've done a few things: Sully's [as usual] was a
fine time and a great gig, but that's old news now. Last
Sunday, we shot an episode of the regional cable TV show
"Bands
on the Road". I must admit that I was skeptical at
the prospect, but Bill Morse and crew were very professional and
the show was really a damn good time. We played virtually our entire
set [as it currently stands] and threw in a cover at the end [that
Foo Fighters song we love so much]. Seeing the playback convinced
me that it was a great idea - the quality of the video and on-the-fly
editing [courtesy of Crystal - this girl is in High School and has
a genuine knack!] really blew me away. I'd heartily recommend that
any band in the area [or out of it] that wants a great calling card
for themselves contact Bill and get him a promo pack - you won't
regret it. The episode should air in December - we'll keep you posted.
In other news, final touches on our recording have commenced. By
this time in November, the album should be finished [but for mastering]
and ready for pressing. Now comes the shitty part - getting together
the funds to press it. We hope to have the finished product in our
hands and ready for sale in January, but that'll depend on cash
flow. Fucking money... grrrrr. Okay, I'm through griping. In the
meantime, we're beginning work writing our next album [stop laughing].
We're planning to begin recording it [most likely at Nova
Sound Studios] in mid-spring of 2004. We're hoping to finish
and release it by the end of 2004; beginning a trend of yearly releases.
Label? Well, we're working on that too, with a few indie labels
in mind for the second release.
Don't even ask about our video - it's a big question mark right
now. We're hoping it'll be included in our Bands on the Road episode,
but we're not holding our breath.
That's it for now. Don't expect any gigs in the near future, unless
you count an opening slot or two on the Living
Colour tour. Which reminds me - the new Living Colour
album 'Collidoscope'
is out now - BUY IT! Cheers, your Kelvins.
08.12.03
- The Band Slam was a fine time! We took the stage at around 10:45
[unbelieveable, as that was the scheduled slot], following country
band Smokehouse. Why did they put us on after a country band?
Only they know... It was a riot playing with big "Country 92.5"
banners draped across the stage in front of us, and of course I
had to make a comment [BIG MOUTH.], but we didn't play Freebird
[I think Smokehouse took care of that]. Within a few songs, the
country fans shuffled out, replaced by lots of our friends and a
few band members from Renata, Subtle Mischief, Meat
& Potatoes [Crivalone!], Randy Collins, and the
fabulous Kate Callahan probably others - I can't really remember].
We felt like it was a great set, and by the end I was properly drenched
and practically voiceless. India Blue [Advocate Photographer] stopped
by and took some shots of us - thanks India! That's all I have to
say about the show, except thanks to all of you who showed up and
continue to support us. Don't forget to come out to the September
6th gig at Sully's!
One more tidbit: The new Living Colour CD will drop in early
October - look for a very cool cover of 'Back in Black' as the possible
first single. Support these mofos, they're a real rock band!
08.02.03
- New shows upcoming: August 7th in The Hartford Advocate Grand
Band Slam [Coach's | 10:45pm], September 6th at Sully's with
another great NYC band called American
Popular. Details on the SHOWS page.
07.22.03
- The ShagFest was a great time for us, despite a few technical
problems prior to the set. We got to see a few great bands, including
the very polished power pop of Famous Blue Raincoat, the
bombastic voice of Rachel Platten and the Zappa-esque madness
of Incognito Love Sofa. We've just booked September 6th at
Sully's, and will appear at the Grand Band Slam on August
7th at Coach's at 10:45pm. Hope to see you there...
07.11.03
- We Kelvins will be taping an episode of the local cable TV show
'Bands on the Road' in Windsor on Sunday, October 12th,
for future broadcast. We'll be interviewed and will perform live
there for a studio audience that could include YOU! If you're
interested in attending the taping, email
us and we'll set it up. Many thanks to Bill of Bands
on the Road for the opportunity! In other news, today is my [Greg's]
birthday - WooHoo! I've written a new song that we'll debut soon,
and I'm working on more as of this writing. Also, we'll be performing
on August 7th at the Hartford Advocate Grand Band Slam, though it
looks as though we've taken second place again... always the bridesmaids!
Details as they unfold on the venue and time.
06.13.03
- Your "rusty" Kelvins had a great time last Friday night
at Sully's.
We celebrated the [perhaps temporary] return of our original guitar
player Mark, who played as though he'd never left.
Chris Ryan & The Noise, the openers, really kicked
ASS as a rock duo [read the review in
this week's Advocate] and stayed around to catch our set - Thanks!
Local Advocate reviewer Thomas Pizzola was on hand to write
up the show, and found us a bit rusty... THere's his review:
"Also, on the bill were local hard rock miscreants the Kelvins
who were playing only their second show in six months due to the
loss of original lead guitarist Mark Tallberg. But during that time,
the band had a hard time finding an adequate replacement. So, Tallberg
rejoined the band after settling some personal issues that he had
to attend to. Now he's back in the fold and the classic Kelvins
line-up is ready to play out again. As far this night's show, the
band sounded all right, but a little rusty. This is to be expected
from a band that has taken a six-month lay-off. So, I'm sure once
they get back into the swing of things they will be back to their
old selves."
Thomas - thanks for the ink, we always appreciate it! We promise
we'll be supersonic for the ShagFest in July. Thanks to all
who came out [Megan, you're a nutball.] and a shout out to the Riccardo's
employees who joined the fray [you're buying the next round...].
As for Mark and the guitarist search, here's the very latest, hot
off the press news: Mark has tentatively agreed to come back as
our guitar player, but we're still open to hear from you guitarists
out there who want to be a part of the group. Why? Well, 2 reasons:
1) Mark may change his mind. 2) We may consider adding a fifth Kelvin
if the player is spectacular and really feels like a Kelvin.
That's it for now... Oh, one last note - Thanks to all who voted
for us in the Advocate poll! voting is now closed, so we'll have
to wait until July 24th to see the results.
06.09.03
- Well, The Kelvins returned alrighty. We had a fucking blast at
Sully's last friday night, and felt like we'd never taken that 6-month
hiatus. Mark played every note perfectly [not bad for having been
away from the guitar for so long]. Chris
Ryan & The Noise opened the show with an amazing set
of powerfull, stripped-down rock [just 2 of them!]. We can't wait
to gig with them again. Our next gig? The ShagFest! July 19th at
Sully's, it's an all-day, all-night show with 9+ bands, food and
shagging on the tiki bar! See you there, Greg. Oh, and by the way,
please don't forget to VOTE
FOR US
in
the Hartford Advocate Grand Band Slam!
06.05.03
- A few items:
- Please vote for your Kelvins in the Hartford Advocate
Grand Band Slam! CLICK
HERE to vote.
- We rehearsed with our original guitarist Mark last night for the
upcoming show at Sully's this Friday night. The kid hasn't played
the material more than once in 6 months... and remembered everything
to the note. Shit, he's good. CLICK
HERE for directions to Sully's!
- Someone find Dan Salazar and beg him to finish our video.
- Many thanks to those of you who came out last Wednesday to
The Webster Underground to see your Kelvins perform for the first
time in 6 months! We had a great time, despite the fact that the
goddamned bar closed during our set. To those of you who
accidentally went to the big room and saw 3rd Eye Blind for only
seven bucks, congrats!
05.24.03
- As some of you may know, our new guitarist, John Roderick, has
decided that life as a Kelvin is not for him. We wish John the best,
and continue our search for our new lead guitar player. If you or
anyone you know [male or female - doesn't matter] wants to audition,
please CLICK HERE to read up on
the position and contact us. As for our upcoming gigs, former guitarist
Mark Tallberg has agreed to rejoin us temporarily and fulfill our
obligations. Thanks Mark!
05.11.03
- My computer had gone into some some form of computer catatonia
for a while, but with the use of a nifty program called "Disk
Warrior", I've been able to coax it back into working order.
Since it's been a while since I could update this site, here's the
news:
First, we obviously didn't have our gig at Arch Street on the 25th
of April [scheduling problems...], but we've got some new bookings
that I promise are locked-in. Wednesday, May 28th, we're going to
work the kinks out with a set at a multi-band show at The Webster
Underground. Tix are $10. at the door for this 18+ show, but you
can get them from us for only $7. if you email
us or call us at 525-1707. On Friday, June 6th, we'll be playing
what is essentially our first headlining gig [of extended length]
at Sully's. The opening act is a band you shouldn't miss: Chris
Ryan & the Noise from NYC. I've corresponded with Chris
a bit, and his music is very cool. We've also got a strange gig
brewing - opening a New Haven Ravens game on June 21st in... New
Haven. This gig is very tentative, so wait for details before buying
those Ravens tix. No, we won't be playing any "Jock Rock".
Next, we've been in the studio, mixing the tracks for our CD. It's
tantalizingly close to completion now, and we're glad we took the
time to do it right. Why all of this time? Well, we've actually
only put in a total of about a week into recording, but getting
the right people [Fran Flannery, Andy Stackpole, Dave Shuman, Joe
Sanborn and others] to work on it has been a "hurry up and
wait" situation. All of these gentlemen have shown great skill
and care in making the album sound like us. The results are damn
good - we hope you'll agree when it's finished this summer.
03.12.03
- Always the bridesmaid... We didn't win the Unsygned Artist award,
but we'll be at The Webster on Friday night to support our friends
who did. Things are going well with new guitarist John Roderick,
and we're on-track for getting back out to the clubs soon. The latest
website in the area is NewHavenRocks.com.
We've signed up on their site, so click on the rock below and vote
for us to show your support for both your Kelvins and this new site.
|
Thanks
[in advance...] for voting! I think that's it for news for the
moment. We'll have pics of John up on the site soon, and a new
song to debut at our upcoming "Return of the Kelvins"
gig - as well as expanded, new versions of a few of the songs
you already know. Also, don't be surprised to see a fifth person
on-stage at upcoming gigs, as we may invite a very talented
singer to lend some harmonies and spice things up a bit... |
02.28.03
- Well, we didn't win the Snow Slam, but we've been nominated for
a "People's Rock Award" by Unsygned
Artist.com! I like the sound of that: "People's Rock Award".
Sounds like Soviet propaganda... Anyway, Here's the gist: YOU, the
"People" must email your votes for us to
info@unsygnedartist.com
- just put something like "I vote Kelvins MoFo!" in the
email and, with enough votes, we win! Winners will perform at The
Webster Theater [where else...] on March 14th, so VOTE TODAY!!!
Oh, and by the way, we Kelvins have a new guitarist! One John Roderick
has joined the fold - we'll tell you all about him soon...
